How These Audit Tips Can Fix Your IRS Problems
If you receive a notice from the IRS that you’re being audited, don’t be alarmed. Leave your problems behind with the following helpful IRS audit tips:
- You will get a bill next if you don’t reply to the notice in a specific amount of time, normally 30 days.
- Read the notice and follow directions, as the items you need to bring to the audit are on it.
- Organize. It will help if the documents you need for the audit are organized even if you are not good at it. This will show the auditor that you are an organized person. Have all the needed papers together with your adding machine tape attached. This will save the auditor time.
- It’s your responsibility to provide the documents needed, so if some records that could support your case are missing, request for them right away, as it may take awhile .
- Bring the requested documents to the audit. Extra documentation shouldn’t be taken to the audit. If they ask something that wasn’t requested, tell them that it’s at home. The issue will hopefully be dropped.
- Leave the attitude at home.Don’t go to the audit angry because it won’t help. Remain calm.If you’re courteous and polite, the audit will be a piece of cake and the auditor will see things your way.
- Present copies of the documents to the auditor and keep the originals. You will not get them back if they get lost.
- Keep what you say at a bare minimum. “Yes” and “no” are safe answers. Supplying the auditor more information than is necessary may provide him a reason to request more documentation. For example, you’ll be indicating an increase on your income if you tell him that you have purchased a new car or home. This could be a red flag to the auditor for the need to check you out further.
- The right to appeal is yours, but it’s still best to fix the issues at the audit.
